Upper Bavaria

The Passion Plays, the Andechs Monastery, Lüftlmalerei (fresco painting), the Blue Rider art movement, Zugspitze, the Five Lakes District, the Linderhof – the list is endless. It’s hard to decide where to stop first. Why not take a break at picturesque Chieming on the Chiemsee in Chiemgau? This community of around 4,000 residents is situated in the district of Traunstein - and they’re lucky to reside amidst an impressive landscape. One of them is Sten Nadolny, the famous author of “The Discovery of Slowness”. What inspired him to write this work, which has been translated into 20 languages? It doesn’t take much reflection to figure it out - just turn around once in Chieming and you’ll know. The view to the south sweeps across the glacial landscape to the Chiemgau Alps whose Sonntagshorn, at 1,961 metres, towers high into the sky. The Chiemsee, a large lake also called the Bavarian Sea by locals, lies at the foot of the mountain and covers an expanse of 80 square kilometres.
